Huron Chipper a Broadly Adapted Chip-Processing Variety with Long-Term Storage Potential and Resistance to Late Blight and Common Scab

Abstract

Huron Chipper is a high yielding round white chip-processing variety with resistance to late blight ( Phytophthora infestans ) and tolerance to common scab ( Streptomyces scabies ). Selected from a cross between the Michigan State University breeding lines MSQ070-1 and MSR156-7, it was designated MSW485-2 during its initial evaluation and development. Huron Chipper is high yielding and broadly adapted, showing equal or better agronomic performance compared to Snowden in all major growing regions in the United States. In on-farm trials in Michigan and national SNAC trials, Huron Chipper had higher total and marketable yields and specific gravity (1.083 in Michigan, 1.088 on average nationally) compared to Snowden. Formally released in 2018, Huron Chipper offers producers an agronomically competitive alternative to Snowden and Atlantic with better resistance to common scab, late blight, and blackspot bruise with high chip-processing quality up to eight months post-harvest.
