Abstract
Plecia plagiata (Wiedemann, 1824) is a species with a wide geographic distribution in the Neotropical region, with records in 20 countries. However, some records are notably vague, only mentioning the occurrence of the species in a certain country or region without a precise locality. This species had records for almost all months of the year, except for April, May, and December. Here, the geographic and seasonal distribution of P. plagiata are extended based on records from iNaturalist, a citizen science social network, and deposited material from scientific collections. In total, new records for 125 first-level administrative divisions in the Neotropical region were reported. The adult morphology and identification are discussed. Additionally, information on feeding habits and reproductive behavior are provided for the first time.
