The endoplasmic reticulum factory and its machineries

Abstract

Organelles are membrane-bound molecular factories that perform unique roles. However, they are by no means isolated and share information with each other at points of contact. The properties of ‘sharing’ and ‘uniqueness’ are reflected in the proteins that reside in these organelles, where similar machines can share tasks to back each other up but also perform their own unique tasks. Here, I will explore these concepts in one of the largest organelles – the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
