Abstract

Pale‐grey cells appeared in the livers of healthy and non‐stressed brown trout Salmo trutta 3 weeks post‐hatching whereas interhepatocytic macrophages appeared at 5 months. Cells with intermediate morphological characteristics between those of pale‐grey cells and macrophages were identified in all ages studies. Cell ultrastructure supported the idea that pale‐grey cells probably belonged to the macrophage lineage, being eventual precursors of the active phagocytes residing amongst hepatocytes.
