Melanophore constellations allow robust individual identification of wild 0+ year Atlantic salmon

Abstract

Melanophore constellation patterns on the heads of 0+ year Atlantic salmon Salmo salar allowed robust identification of individuals, and were probably unique. Reliable identification was possible from shortly after emergence until at least 16 months later. The method for recording the patterns was inexpensive, required no special equipment and had no additional physical impact on the fish.
