Reflections on hydrogeology education and lifelong learning

Bruce Misstear
Hydrogeology Journal · 2026

Abstract

There is a strong global demand for hydrogeological expertise, yet educational opportunities for hydrogeologists are not so widely available. Taught masters programmes can provide hydrogeologists with the fundamentals of groundwater science and many of its wider applications. Groundwater engineering (including well design, construction and pumping systems) should feature more strongly in such hydrogeology courses. Scientific associations such as the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) can make a significant contribution to lifelong learning through training courses, mentoring and educational materials.
