Staphylococcus aureus is a notorious bacterial pathogen. It colonises the anterior nares of humans and can cause life-threatening invasive diseases when it is transferred in open wounds. In this article we explain the many facettes of S. aureus pathogenicity in the light of human immune defence strategies. Additionally, we outline the potential of the nasal microbiome to prevent S. aureus colonisation and infection.
