In the first molecular study of a member of the threatened avian family, Mesitornithidae, we used nine polymorphic microsatellite loci to elucidate parentage, patterns of within‐group kinship and occurrence of extra‐group paternity in the subdesert mesite Monias benschi , of southwest Madagascar.
