New records of planktonic cyanobacteria in New Zealand freshwaters are reported. Identified for the first time were one genus, Sphaerocavum , represented by one species, and one species of Apha‐nocapsa , five species of Microcystis , and three of Anabaena. Microcystis panniformis has previously been recorded only from tropical or subtropical regions. Descriptions, drawings, and photographs of species are presented.
