Transport in Porous Media · 2025 · Vol. 152 · Issue 6 · Springer
Density-driven flow caused by concomitant differences in temperature and salinity, known as thermohaline convection, is important in understanding the circulation of deep geofluids, e.g., in geothermal energy production. We carried out experiments of free thermal and thermohaline convection in homogeneous isotropic media using a laboratory-scale two-dimensional tank filled with glass beads representing a porous medium. Glass b...

In this work, various high-accuracy numerical schemes for transport problems in fractured media are further developed and compared. Specifically, to capture sharp gradients and abrupt changes in time, schemes with low order of accuracy are not always sufficient. To this end, discontinuous Galerkin up to order two, Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin, and finite differences, are formulated. The resulting schemes are solved with s...

We study the mechanisms of advective trapping in composite porous media that consist of circular inclusions of distributed hydraulic conductivity embedded in a high conductivity matrix. Advective trapping occurs when solute enters low velocity regions in the media. Transport is analyzed in terms of breakthrough curves measured at the outlet of the system. The curve’s peak behavior depends on the volume fraction occupied by the...
