Summary Bacterial biofilms demonstrate adaptive resistance in response to antimicrobial stress more effectively than corresponding planktonic populations. We propose here that, in biofilms, reaction‐diffusion limited penetration may result in only low levels of antimicrobial exposure to deeper regions of the biofilm.
