The Marine Institute, Ireland, runs a suite of operational regional and coastal ocean models. Recent developments include several tailored products that focus on the key needs of the Irish aquaculture sector. In this article, an overview of the products and services derived from the models are presented. The authors give an overview of a shellfish model developed in-house and that was designed to predict the growth, the physio...
Individual variation in fatty‐acid and thiamine concentrations were determined in lake trout Salvelinus namaycush eggs collected at two spawning grounds in Lake Michigan. A suite of predictor variables, including spawning location, egg fatty‐acid and thiamine concentrations, were used to attempt to explain cause‐and‐effect in early life stage mortality among S. namaycush families. Lipid and fatty‐acid composition of S. namaycu...
The morphological and histological features of the gut of juvenile racer goby Neogobius gymnotrachelus [range of body mass 0·2–0·9 g and standard length ( L S ) 20·0–38·8 mm] were examined in fish collected from the Włocławek Reservoir on the Vistula River, Poland. Evidence is provided of the stomachless nature of the gut of the racer goby. The intestine of the juveniles lacks the intestinal bulb. A particular feature of the r...
Optimization of fertilization success in Sander vitreus is influenced by the sperm : egg ratio and ova storageNARA Subscribed
Walleye Sander vitreum eggs could be stored at 7° C for up to 30 h with 60% fertilization rates. Fertilization rates at 1 and 12° C fell to 17 and 5%, respectively. At spermatozoa : egg ratios c . ∼ 70%. Therefore, a standard spermatozoa : egg ratio of 25 000 : 1 was established and is recommended for studies concerning fertilizing success.
The high cost of fish meal in tilapia diets warrants the potential use of cottonseed meal (CSM) as an alternative source of high quality protein. The effects of varying levels of CSM (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) as fish meal protein replacement on growth, blood parameters, spleen characteristics, free and bound gossypol in blood plasma, haemoglobin and haematocrit were determined in tilapia. Gossypol (C 30 H 30 O 8 ) is a polyphen...
Juvenile growth and survival of heat‐shocked triploid hybrid saugeyes, Stizostedion vitreum × S. canadenseNARA Subscribed
Triploid hybrid saugeyes may be a desirable stocking alternative because diploid saugeyes are fertile and can compromise the genetic integrity of parental stocks. Four groups of saugeye eggs were heat‐shocked 5 min after fertilization for 15 min at 31 °C, which resulted in an 86.7 ± 9.4% triploidy rate and 57.8 ± 24.3% survival to the eyed‐stage. Heat shocked and control saugeyes were stocked in two ponds for 40 days at 395 00...
Muskellunge Esox masquinongy eggs activated with UV‐irradiated yellow perch Perca flavescens sperm were subjected to heat shock at 31 ± 1° C for 6 min, 20 min after fertilization in three experiments. Survival at eyed stage was 1·7 ±1·6, 6·8 ± 4·8 and 2·3 ±0·5% in experiments I, II and III, respectively. After rearing the gynogenetic muskellunge in troughs and then in ponds, the sex ratio of gynogens in experiment I did not si...
Biosynthesis of ascorbic acid by extant actinopterygiansNARA Subscribed
Polypterus senegalus , the longnose gar Lepisosteus osseus and the bowfin Amia calva had gulonolactone oxidase activity in the kidney and thus can synthesize ascorbic acid de novo . The enzyme activity was associated with the microsomal fraction. The common carp Cyprinus carpio and the goldfish Carassius auratus had no gulonolactone oxidase activity. Antibodies directed against white sturgeon gulonolactone oxidase showed cross...
Fertilization in landlocked sea lamprey: storage of gametes, optimal sperm: egg ratio, and methods of assessing fertilization successNARA Subscribed
Ovulated, unfertilized eggs of sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus could be stored for 1 day at 15° C without significant loss of fertilizing ability. After 2 days storage most eggs could still be fertilized. Lamprey semen could be stored up to 1 day. Thereafter, a decrease in sperm fertilizing ability occurred, accompanied with a decrease in sperm motility. Unlike teleost fish, sea lamprey eggs could still be fertilized after 1 h...
Anti‐proteinase activity has been found in seminal plasma of eight teleost fish species: brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, lake whitefish, bream, northern pike, Danube salmon and burbot. This activity correlated with seminal plasma protein and sperm concentrations. Using a mammalian (bovine) trypsin for detecting proteinase inhibitors it was found for the first time that there are species‐specific electrophoretic profil...
Vertical distribution of planktivorous 0+ pikeperch, Stizostedion lucioperca (L.), in relation to particulate or filter feedingNARA Subscribed
The main prey of 0+ pikeperch in the pelagic zone of the Sulejow Reservoir was Leptodora kindtii and copepods, which together constituted only about 20% of the zooplankton by number in the water. Leptodora kindtii predominated in pikeperch food close to the surface, and copepods in deeper water. A depth‐dependent shift in feeding mode from large particle selection to filtering, as an adaptation to reduce intraspecific competit...
