Hydrologic droughts are intensifying globally due to climate change and human water demand. Although a myriad of drought impacts on river ecosystems have been described, manipulative experiments on the topic have often yielded inconclusive or inconsistent results. Here, we investigated to what extent this inconsistency could be due to uncontrolled variation in methodological choices, or to variation in how different ecological...

Tree ferns (order Cyatheales) have been moved from their native ranges for more than two centuries, and the number of species introduced to new countries has recently increased rapidly. However, no comprehensive global list of alien tree ferns exists. Botanical garden collections and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility database were examined, and a systematic literature review was conducted to collect information on t...

This study provides new insights into magma ascent based on mantle xenoliths erupted during the last explosive volcanic activity of Mt. Vulture volcano (southern Italy), combining H diffusion chronometry with fluid-mechanical models. Olivine crystals within lherzolite, wehrlite and dunite xenoliths are Mg-rich (Fo 88-90 ), with NiO contents up to 0.30 wt%. They show hydrogen loss profiles between 0.5 and 2.5 ppm, and the resul...

The Lower Thermosphere–Ionosphere (LTI) is the interface region between the Earth’s atmosphere and space. It is modulated by the energy and momentum deposition from the magnetosphere above and by the impacting waves from the lower atmosphere. The LTI region is defined by the co-existence and interaction of neutral and ionized species within the region’s electric and magnetic fields. This interplay results in unique and complex...

Climate‐induced flow alteration is decreasing snowpack and advancing snowmelt, subjecting mountain streams to longer low‐flow periods. Yet, anticipating how stream ecosystems respond to prolonged low flows remains challenging because distinct trophic levels can respond differently, and non‐native predators can dampen or amplify responses. Here, we conducted a large‐scale mesocosm experiment to examine how early, prolonged low...

Reperfusion following myocardial infarction salvages the ischemic heart but paradoxically exacerbates injury. Yet, efficient treatment for cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury is still missing in clinics. ATP release through Pannexin1 (PANX1) channels facilitates recruitment of leukocytes to the injured myocardium. Thus, PANX1 channel inhibition might confer cardioprotection. Currently available PANX1 channel blockers lack spec...
