Iron is an important micronutrient required by marine microorganisms. The Southern Ocean is an ecosystem where primary production is limited by the availability of iron, but how microorganisms in this region adapt to low‐iron conditions or respond to episodic iron inputs is understudied. We tested how external iron additions would impact bacterial production of siderophores during phytoplankton growth using shipboard incubatio...

The future of how we understand and manage ecosystems largely depends on direct and continuous observations that connect local territories to planetary processes. Latin America (LATAM: Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean) hosts ecosystems critical for regulating global carbon, water, and energy cycles. However, persistent underinvestment in science and technology hampers the long‐term monitoring capacity neede...

Reptile microbiotas remain poorly understood despite their importance for host ecology and evolution. This study investigated how diet, climate and evolutionary history shape the gut microbiota of 234 Australian freshwater turtles spanning 10 species, four climatic zones and contrasting trophic strategies. It was found that turtles' microbiotas were dominated by Pseudomonadota, Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota. Microbial rich...

The design of experiments to investigate the combined effects of multiple stressors requires exposing target organisms to multiple combinations of stressor doses. Concurrent manipulation of stressors is often infeasible with wildlife, but long‐lasting health effects allow individual health to be used as an integrator of prior stressor exposure. The population of bottlenose dolphins in Barataria Bay, Louisiana, experienced long...

Rationale Fatal opioid overdoses involving synthetic opioids have increased >10-fold over the past 8 years. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid acting at the mu-opioid receptor (MOR), has largely replaced heroin as the predominant illicit opioid available. Various analogs have been synthesized from the fentanyl scaffold, including 2-furanylfentanyl, one of the most trafficked analogs from 2019 to 2024. Despite its prevalence,...

Kelp forests are among the most extensive and productive coastal ecosystems, yet they remain underrepresented in global conservation policy despite widespread declines driven by interacting global- (i.e., ocean warming, marine heatwaves) to local-scale stressors. At the same time, kelp conservation and restoration efforts are expanding rapidly across regions, but measures of success and syntheses tend to primarily focus on eco...

The deep‐water catshark family (Pentanchidae) is the most species‐rich family among extant shark lineages. Within this family, the genus Apristurus is the largest, comprising small, deep‐sea species characterised by elongated bodies and dorso‐ventrally compressed snouts. Five Apristurus species are currently recognised from the North Atlantic, including waters surrounding Ireland and the United Kingdom ( A. aphyodes , A. lauru...
