Analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene of 27 species or sub‐species of bitterlings showed that bitterlings comprise an Acheilognathus clade and a Tanakia‐Rhodeus clade, partially supporting an earlier classification based on morphology and karyology.
