Multimorbidity as a predictor of mortality in companion dogsNARA Subscribed
Global online trade in primates for petsNARA Subscribed
Many challenges remain before we can fully understand the multifaceted role that natural organic matter (NOM) plays in soil and aquatic systems. These challenges remain despite the considerable progress that has been made in understanding NOM’s properties and reactivity using the latest analytical techniques. For nearly 4 decades, the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS, which is a non-profit scientific society) has d...
Guiding principles for rewildingNARA Subscribed
There has been much recent interest in the concept of rewilding as a tool for nature conservation, but also confusion over the idea, which has limited its utility. We developed a unifying definition and 10 guiding principles for rewilding through a survey of 59 rewilding experts, a summary of key organizations’ rewilding visions, and workshops involving over 100 participants from around the world. The guiding principles convey...
Subglacial Lake Vostok is located ~4 km beneath the surface of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and has been isolated from the atmosphere for ≫15 million yr. Concerns for environmental protection have prevented direct sampling of the lake water thus far. However, an ice core has been retrieved from above the lake in which the bottom ,85 m represents lake water that has accreted (i.e., frozen) to the bottom of the ice sheet. We mea...
A harmonic‐analysis technique is used to compute tidal amplitudes and phases over the south‐west Pacific Ocean from the first 300 cycles (up to November 2000) of TOPEX/Poseidon satellite altimetry. The analysis is performed along groundtracks and at track crossover locations and the resultant harmonics are shown to compare favourably with those from open‐coast sea‐level gauges and from regional and global tidal models. Small‐s...
Short time scale (less than seasonal) variability in commercial catch rates of smooth pink shrimp, Pandalus jordani, off the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, was examined in relation to changes in environmental conditions. Catch per unit of effort (CPUE) data were used as a proxy for catchability to identify environmental conditions affecting the availability of shrimp to the two main gear types in this fishery: otter t...
The trophic dynamics of riverine bacterioplankton: Relationships among substrate availability, ectoenzyme kinetics, and growthNARA Subscribed
The role of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the trophic dynamics of aquatic systems is difficult to study. One approach is to focus on the activity of the extracellular enzyme systems that heterotrophic bacteria use to obtain nutrients from DOM. These data are easy to acquire, but difficult to interpret, because we lack general models that relate these activities to the two sides of the trophic reaction: the DOM pool and bac...
