Overland transport of recreational boats facilitates movement of aquatic invasive species (AIS) between waterbodies. Once established, AIS can have detrimental and difficult-to-manage ecological impacts. Prevention, the most cost-effective AIS management strategy, is one strategy in which management agencies focus on reducing spread by implementing programs like boater education, watercraft inspection, and hot water decontamin...

Hatchery‐reared age‐0 red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus (Poey), were released onto artificial habitats in the Gulf of Mexico. Fish showed 12.7% survival after 7 months on small habitats (0.86 m 3 ) and 3.1% survival after 8 months on large habitats (3.9 m 3 ). Emigration was estimated by the movement of fish to unstocked habitats and accounted for 76.8% of the total decline in abundance at release sites after 26 days. Fish sho...

Summary Rock, air and service water samples were collected for microbial analyses from 3.2 kilometres depth in a working Au mine in the Witwatersrand basin, South Africa. The ∼ metre‐wide mined zone was comprised of a carbonaceous, quartz, sulphide, uraninite and Au bearing layer, called the Carbon Leader, sandwiched by quartzite and conglomerate. The microbial community in the service water was dominated by mesophilic aerobic...

Information developed during recently completed evaluations of the status of seven species of anadromous Pacific salmonids ( Oncorhynchus spp.) in the Pacific Northwest was used to characterize patterns of intraspecific diversity along three major axes: ecology, life history and biochemical genetics. Within the study area, the species’ ranges, and therefore the number of distinct ecological regions inhabited differ considerabl...
