Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is a hereditary tumor predisposition syndrome caused by pathogenic germline variants in the VHL gene. Patients with VHL disease have an increased risk of developing characteristic VHL disease-associated lesions such as clear cell renal cell carcinoma, retinal angioma, central nervous system hemangioblastoma, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and pheochromocytomas. Loss of the VHL gene results in...

Management strategy evaluation (MSE) is a simulation approach that serves as a “light on the hill” ( Smith, 1994 ) to test options for marine management, monitoring, and assessment against simulated ecosystem and fishery dynamics, including uncertainty in ecological and fishery processes and observations. MSE has become a key method to evaluate trade-offs between management objectives and to communicate with decision makers. H...

Invasive infections caused by carbapenemase-producing bacteria are associated with excess mortality. We applied a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) on clinical samples with an elevated likelihood of carbapenemase-producing bacteria and documented its impact on antibiotic treatment decisions. Among 38 patients, twelve tested positive for infections caused by carbapenemase-producing bacteria (31.6%), mainly in blood cultures. KPC ( n...

The objectives of this work were to quantify the spatial and temporal distribution of the occurrence of anadromous fishes (alewife Alosa pseudoharengus , blueback herring Alosa aestivalis and American shad Alosa sapidissima ) in the stomachs of demersal fishes in coastal waters of the north‐west Atlantic Ocean. Results show that anadromous fishes were detectable and quantifiable in the diets of common marine piscivores for eve...

Observations relevant to the North American stock complex of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., suggest that marine mortality is influenced by variation in predation pressure affecting post‐smolts during the first months at sea. This hypothesis was tested for Gulf of Maine (GOM) stocks by examining wind pseudostress and the distribution of piscivorous predator fields potentially affecting post‐smolts. Marine survival has decline...

The meso‐scale trophic dynamics of cod Gadus morhua were examined based upon tri‐monthly stomach sample collections from a nearshore, localized ( c. 800 km 2 ) region off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, U.S.A. The major objective for this work was to relate any changes in cod diet and amount of food eaten to seasonal variations in prey availability, water temperature and spawning at a spatial scale between broad‐scale and laboratory...

Multivariate ordination techniques were used to examine how size classes of four flatfish species, American plaice Hippoglossoides platessoides , winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus , yellowtail flounder Limanda ferruginea and fourspot flounder Paralichthys oblongus , are related to bottom depth, bottom temperature, substratum grain size and temporal factors using a 35 year time series from autumn and spring in the G...
