Japanese waters represent the northern distributional limit of the western Pacific distribution of the oceanic manta ray ( Mobula birostris) , yet movement ecology in this region remains poorly understood. We report movements of the first satellite‐tagged individual in Japan. High‐resolution depth–time series data documented repeated dives to 300 m and a maximum depth of 1082 m, with deeper use occurring predominantly at night...
Thermal tolerance and acclimation limits in bull trout ( Salvelinus confluentus ) alevinNARA Subscribed
The critical thermal maximum ( CT max ) of bull trout ( Salvelinus confluentus ) alevin was measured after 3 weeks of acclimation to 4–21°C. CT max increased from 24.3 at 4°C to 26.7 at 9°C, plateaued between 9 and 12°C (26.9°C), and declined to 25.9°C at 15°C. Acclimation mortality increased above 12°C, reaching 53.7% at 15°C, and no fish survived at 18–21°C. Condition factor declined at ≥12°C. Results indicate bull trout ale...
A Model for Clinician and Staff Education in the Engagement of American Indians in Genomic ResearchNARA Subscribed
Despite notable differences in cancer incidence and outcomes, fewer American Indians have participated in cancer research and genomic testing relative to their population size. Contributing factors include historical scientific mistrust, lack of culturally appropriate research methodologies, and limited access. With the launch of a cancer genomic sequencing trial in American Indians from the Southwestern United States (US), cl...
Diverse Evolutionary Histories Characterise Polyploidy in the Deep‐Sea Brittle Star Genus OphiosabineNARA Subscribed
Polyploidy is rare in animals, where it is often associated with unusual modes of reproduction. Here we use phased exon capture data to identify ploidy and investigate the subgenome composition of four polyploid taxa in the deep‐sea brittle star genus Ophiosabine (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea). Of the four, O. anomala and O. vivipara are hybrid allopolyploids, the latter particularly complex comprising at least three progenitor...
Governance Arrangements That Fit Social‐Ecological Context Are Associated With Fishery SustainabilityNARA Subscribed
In many parts of the world, natural resources are primarily managed by governance arrangements at the local level. Those arrangements range from collective, such as cooperatives and associations, to individualistic, such as patrons and owner‐operators. A key question is how such arrangements influence resource use and associated social and ecological outcomes. We hypothesize that sustainable resource use is not associated with...
The interdisciplinary study of volcanic processes, which extend across all timescales and lengths, requires a multitude of approaches, ranging from analogue and numerical modelling to observations and fieldwork and extending to mathematics. A conference was held at the East African Institute for Fundamental Research, affiliated with the University of Rwanda, a country which, along with the Democratic Republic of Congo, present...
Marine megafauna species are affected by a wide range of anthropogenic threats. To evaluate the risk of such threats, species’ vulnerability to each threat must first be determined. We build on the existing threats classification scheme and ranking system of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species by assessing the vulnerability of 256 marine megafauna species to 23 at‐sea threat...
The Toxicology Investigators Consortium 2024 Annual ReportNARA Subscribed
Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs: 30–150 m) are characterized by environmental conditions and biological assemblages that are distinct from those of shallow reefs (< 30 m). Several studies have described changes in species richness, abundance and composition of reef fish assemblages, from shallow reefs to MCEs; however, few have considered how different functional groups change over the same gradient. Here, remotely operated...
