The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident released radionuclides directly into the ocean as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. This material has been transported across the Pacific Ocean and detected in the northeastern Pacific. We began a surface ocean 129 I monitoring program a few months after this disaster in June 2011, with samples from Scripps Pier, La Jolla, California, USA, with the...

Main conclusion The recalcitrant seeds of Brosimum alicastrum , a widespread tropical tree, have an exceptional ability to resist desiccation, which we propose has contributed to the dominance of the species across a broad precipitation gradient in forests of Latin America. Abstract Seed desiccation sensitivity is relatively common in tree species of tropical rain forests. For such species, pre-germination survival may be as i...

Marine megafauna species are affected by a wide range of anthropogenic threats. To evaluate the risk of such threats, species’ vulnerability to each threat must first be determined. We build on the existing threats classification scheme and ranking system of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species by assessing the vulnerability of 256 marine megafauna species to 23 at‐sea threat...

Columnaris disease, caused by columnaris‐causing bacteria (CCB), affects cultured and wild freshwater fish worldwide. Belonging to the phylum Bacteroidota and the family Flavobacteriaceae, CCB are gram‐negative, yellow‐pigmented bacteria that are presumed ubiquitous in freshwater habitats. Since the first report of the disease in 1922, growth and survival, pathogenesis, and transmission of these pathogens have been intensely r...

Flavobacterium covae and virulent Aeromonas hydrophila are prevalent bacterial pathogens within the US catfish industry that can cause high mortality in production ponds. An assessment of in vivo bacterial coinfection with virulent A. hydrophila (ML09‐119) and F. covae (ALG‐00‐530) was conducted in juvenile channel catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ). Catfish were divided into seven treatments: (1) mock control; (2) and (3) high a...

Motivation Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R packag...

Land use change threatens global biodiversity and compromises ecosystem functions, including pollination and food production. Reduced taxonomic α‐diversity is often reported under land use change, yet the impacts could be different at larger spatial scales (i.e., γ‐diversity), either due to reduced β‐diversity amplifying diversity loss or increased β‐diversity dampening diversity loss. Additionally, studies often focus on taxo...

Channel catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ) and Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) are two aquaculture species of great importance. Intensive production is often hindered by poor growth performance and disease mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of a commercial fermented yeast product, DVAQUA, on channel catfish and Nile tilapia growth performance metrics and disease resistance. Channel catfish and N...

Like many forage fish species, Pacific sand lance ( Ammodytes personatus ) play a key role in nearshore marine ecosystems as an important prey source for a diverse array of predators in the northeastern Pacific. However, the primary threats to Pacific sand lance and their habitat are poorly defined due to a lack of systematic data. Crucial information needed to assess their population status is also lacking including basic kno...

Information on tropical Asian vertebrates has traditionally been sparse, particularly when it comes to cryptic species inhabiting the dense forests of the region. Vertebrate populations are declining globally due to land‐use change and hunting, the latter frequently referred as “defaunation.” This is especially true in tropical Asia where there is extensive land‐use change and high human densities. Robust monitoring requires t...

Both the ecological and social dimensions of fisheries are being affected by climate change. As a result, policymakers, managers, scientists and fishing communities are seeking guidance on how to holistically build resilience to climate change. Numerous studies have highlighted key attributes of resilience in fisheries, yet concrete examples that explicitly link these attributes to social‐ecological outcomes are lacking. To be...

There is growing recognition that a better understanding of how food systems respond to crises is critical to build and protect the food security of local populations. But rigorous and reliable methods to measure food system resilience are still missing. In this paper, we build on the current literature to develop an analytical framework aimed at assessing the resilience of food systems at local level. The novel element of the...
