Chitin and its effects when included in aquafeedNARA Subscribed
Chitin, the second most abundant polysaccharide in nature after cellulose, has been the subject of increasing interest in recent years, particularly in the aquaculture sector. This review focuses on the effects of chitin in aquafeed on growth, nutrient utilization, gut microbiome modulation, and the immune system of aquatic organisms. Data from the literature showed significant variability in response to chitin by species, wit...
European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus , with total lengths ranging from 40·0 to 132·5 mm, were sampled during October 2002 and May 2003 in the northern Adriatic Sea in order to estimate their energy densities ( E D ). A highly significant ( P E D (y)(J g −1 wet mass) and per cent dry mass ( x ) was found: y = 321 x − 3316·9 ( n = 161, r 2 = 0·82).
Summary We characterized the diversity of sulphate‐reducing bacteria (SRB) associated with South African gold mine boreholes and deep aquifer systems in Washington State, USA. Sterile cartridges filled with crushed country rock were installed on two hydrologically isolated and chemically distinct sites at depths of 3.2 and 2.7 km below the land surface (kmbls) to allow development of biofilms. Enrichments of sulphate‐reducing...
