Despite ecological protections, the Mar Menor lagoon in Spain continues to experience eutrophication, leading to uncontrolled proliferation of algae such as Caulerpa prolifera . When it decomposes, it reduces oxygen and creates sludge, causing fish and other aquatic animals to suffocate.
